Whos is Weeknd?

The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer known for his distinctive voice and eclectic music style. Born on February 16, 1990, in Scarborough, Ontario, he is the son of Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye. Raised primarily by his grandmother after his father left the family, The Weeknd grew up in a multicultural neighborhood and was influenced by a variety of musical genres, including traditional Ethiopian music and the works of Michael Jackson.

Early Career

The Weeknd began his music career in 2010 by anonymously uploading songs to YouTube. In 2011, he released three critically acclaimed mixtapes: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. These mixtapes helped him gain a significant following and critical recognition for his dark, alternative R&B style and the mystery surrounding his identity.

Breakthrough and Albums
In 2012, The Weeknd signed with Republic Records and re-released his mixtapes as part of the compilation album Trilogy. His debut studio album, Kiss Land, was released in 2013. He achieved mainstream success with his second album, Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), which included hit singles like “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills.” This album won the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album and was nominated for Album of the Year.

His third album, Starboy (2016), continued his commercial success and featured collaborations with artists like Daft Punk. The album’s title track won another Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. His fourth album, After Hours (2020), included the record-setting single “Blinding Lights,” which became one of the most successful songs of all time.

Recent Work
In 2022, The Weeknd released his fifth studio album, Dawn FM, which explored dance-pop genres. He also co-created and starred in the HBO drama series The Idol in 2023, which, despite being a critical failure, saw commercial success from its accompanying soundtrack.

Achievements
The Weeknd has won multiple Grammy Awards and holds several chart records, including being the first artist to simultaneously hold the top three positions on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart. He is one of the most successful Canadian recording artists, with over 75 million records sold worldwide.

The Weeknd’s career is marked by his ability to blend various musical styles and his continuous evolution as an artist, making him a significant figure in contemporary music.
